A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its role in national projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was proposed pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in total adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
