Can You Solve This? The Forgotten Netherlands Invention That Forged our Contemporary Globe
There are numerous contenders to claim the designation as “world’s most significant invention.” The circular axle. The movable type. The steam engine.
According to a recent publication, however, that title belongs to the automated timber mill conceived through Dutchman Cornelis Corneliszoon during 1593.
“Before automated sawing, constructing a modest merchant vessel necessitated around 10 sawyers working for 90 days,” notes the author. “Using wind-driven lumber mills, an identical amount of cut lumber might be produced in less than seven days.”
Thanks to this rapid mechanical saw, that converted logs into boards using almost no manual labor, Dutch builders could build vessels faster than anyone else, which sparked a century of Dutch naval, financial as well as artistic dominance across the continent and the world.
The First Genuine Industrial Machine
The inventor's lumber mill, argues Dávila, represented “mankind’s initial authentic factory apparatus.” A windmill turned a wheel. One component transformed the circular motion into up-and-down motion for the saw. A separate mechanism changed the rotary movement into a lateral motion feeding the log toward the cutter. A ratchet system shifted the wood ahead a measured step each cycle.
“Each element was modest by itself. The Dutchman’s genius was to combine them so they operated in a perfectly controlled sequence, cutting on every descending motion while advancing on every return stroke. This constituted a remarkably clever use of basic parts.”
