Hazbin Hotel's Showrunner Reveals Rosie and Alastor's Origin Tale Serves as a Huge Teaser for Season Three
Dedicated fans of the show at last got a long-awaited backstory in the second season's episode 4, titled “It's a Deal.” This installment will probably spark extensive conversation and pose many questions about the nature of a certain demonic Overlord who seems significantly stronger than anyone before understood. These fresh disclosures feature a glimpse into the mortal existence of a fan-favorite character before his death and sentence to the underworld.
A Major Tease for Future Seasons
The series creator disclosed a secret about “It's a Deal” – it acts as a major tease for the third season. Additionally, she offered further details into the process of creating the human versions of her infernal cartoon figures.
Warning: Spoilers for episode 4 of Hazbin Hotel, season 2.
In “It’s a Deal”, a look back reveals that popular character Alastor the Radio Demon was a mass murderer in his human life. Knowing full well he was headed to the underworld, he made contact with the realm beyond beforehand to secure a powerful role there. The charismatic leader, who leads the cannibal faction in Hell, vowed Alastor he would become “the strongest Condemned Soul in Hell” in return for his soul.
This prompts an important query: In what way is Rosie sufficiently strong to elevate Alastor above all other Sinner Demons?
“The Rosie and Alastor deal is the first stepping stone in a much bigger story that involves so much, leading into season 3,” the showrunner states. “Obviously that is a perfect question: How is she that powerful? The answer might be various factors, but the revelation is in season three. I am thrilled for people to see it.”
There’s no telling how long viewers will have to wait for Hazbin Hotel’s next season. The production companies have green-lit the third and fourth seasons, but the showrunner often remarks that animated production is a time-consuming endeavor, and later seasons are undated. Nevertheless, she says withholding on specific information is an important part of maintaining season 2’s attention where it belongs.
“The challenge of any kind of deal with demons, or narratives that have mysteries, is giving people just enough information to be like, Something's up here, and then unveiling that as we go, and allowing that be satisfying,” she comments. “So I am quite eager.”
Mysteries Resolved in Season 3
The creator assures that season 3 will tackle the queries fans have been posing, like why Rosie commanded Alastor to vanish for seven years, which weakened his influence in the infernal realm.
“The whole seven years, and the deals these individuals are making, and all that — it contributes to a bigger narrative,” she says.
Meanwhile, the origin story episode provides another glimpse into how the core cast of Sinner Demons looked like as mortals, following after seeing Sir Pentious’ Victorian-era mortal appearance in episode 2. She explains that significant consideration went into the visual creation of these forms.
“The mortal forms of these personas hold so much weight,” she notes. “They vary from appearing quite distinct from their demon form to looking almost identical. With the first character, the first one we see, there was some internal discussion internally between going with something that represents the character, as opposed to selecting an option that's historically correct. We opted for making a design that just seemed like it was him.”
She mentions the biggest debate over the mortal look of Pentious was his lengthy locks: “We were like, ‘No one really had long hair of that style in Victorian-era London.’ But at the same time, we believe the outline is extremely crucial, and we also just thought he looked good. We were like, ‘This just feels right.’ We kind of provided the rationale that he lived in seclusion, so he just let his hair grow out. So there's always a way. As we create the mortal forms of these personas […] it's such a fun thing to explore and figure out. I am looking forward for people to see more of the appearances of the human versions.”
