Individuals Coming Off Slimming Jabs Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users using such medications need to be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Doctors believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

People who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden return of appetite.

"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly starving," recalled an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural changes.
