Comey has stated his clean record regarding the allegations

Former Federal Bureau of Investigation head James the ex-FBI chief has entered an innocent plea to giving untrue testimony to US legislators and impeding a congressional proceeding.

His legal representative filed the plea acting as his counsel in a federal court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday morning.

The defense lawyer stated he would try to have the case terminated for several reasons including that his the accused, a detractor of President Donald Trump, was being targeted.

Mr Comey was indicted just days after the former president pushed his chief prosecutor to move forward against him.

Judicial Process

In court on Wednesday, Comey's lawyer the legal representative told the judge they aimed to present multiple motions to terminate the proceedings before a court case, claiming the prosecution was retaliatory and that a US attorney was unlawfully assigned to handle the legal matter.

James Comey's case was initially overseen by Erik Siebert, who left his position under scrutiny from Donald Trump after his examination into a different opponent - NY AG Letitia James - failed to file indictments.

Judicial Environment

James Comey came across in positive mood as he entered the legal venue on mid-week, conversing with his attorneys and being lighthearted. He was supported by his wife, Patrice Failor and child Maureen Comey, a federal prosecutor who the former government dismissed.

Following the reading to the judge recite his constitutional guarantees and the pair of allegations against him in legal proceedings on mid-week, the defendant was asked if he grasped the allegations.

"I do your honour. Thank you," he informed the court.

Previous Events

Mr Comey was the head of the FBI from four years and was terminated about four months into Trump's first term as president. At the period, Mr Comey was directing an examination into Russian election interference and whether there were any relationships between the Russian government and the election effort.

During his tenure, the director caused a negative reaction from the Democratic party when he declared just shortly prior to the 2016 election that he was investigating political contender Hillary Clinton's use of a personal email system. Charges against Hillary Clinton were not pursued, resulting in negative feedback from conservative politicians as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Government attorneys assert Mr Comey lied to Congress during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in September 2020 when he was being examined about both the email probe as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They claim he misled the upper house by saying he had not permitted a person at the FBI to release to media organizations data about the agency probes.

Legal representatives also accuse James Comey of "improperly attempting to affect, block and slow" the legislative group by making false statements to it.

Personal Comments

Through a recording James Comey posted to his social media after he was charged, he stated he was not guilty and alleged Trump of acting like a "dictator".

"My family and I have been aware for a long time that there are consequences to challenging Donald Trump," he commented. "We refuse to live on our knees."
"I am not guilty," he continued. "Therefore proceed with a trial."

The accusations against the former director came after the former president posted on online platforms demanding his top legal official, Pam Bondi, prosecute Mr Comey and additional individuals.
