The Year 2026 Declared the Era of the Croaking Craze.

My key observation from the recent developer-focused presentation was highly engaging, my primary conclusion was perhaps unexpected: I am certain that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these leaping protagonists. Given that a gathering of frogs is known as an army, it seems they are taking over the industry.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Frogs are far from new to the interactive entertainment. Ever since the era of Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a niche presence. However, their popularity has markedly surged in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an absolute deluge of results. Although, some of these are obscure titles, a great many are legitimate amphibian adventures.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To quantify this rise, I performed a detailed review into the last half-decade of frog-related gaming on Steam. My methodology was based on clear indicators, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The data paint a clear picture: a marked rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The frog's rising status in the cultural zeitgeist is partially visible elsewhere, for example the revival of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. Yet, the wave in gaming appears uniquely strong.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

Frankly, this is a shift I can fully endorse. Frogs have natural design advantages for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are perfectly suited to be designed as memorable characters that frequently end up as a fan favorite in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their long tongues and grappling abilities lend themselves to a host of innovative control schemes.

A number of the showcased games directly leverage these traits. Examples include the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even begun—and the potential for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the most significant year yet.

When these games are received positively—and traditionally, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we could very well be entering a full-blown amphibian entertainment revival.
